There’s no shortage of historic wine estates in and around Stellenbosch, with many tracing their heritage back to the earliest days of the Cape colony in the late-1600s. Alto Wine Estate, first established in 1693, is no exception and yet stands apart from other iconic estates in the region.
For since the farm was first given over entirely to vineyards in 1919, only five winemakers have held the key to the cellar; a remarkable track record of longevity for an industry in constant flux.
Alto, the iconic red wine producer in the Golden Triangle outside Stellenbosch, appointed Bertho van der Westhuizen to take over the reins from his well-known father, Schalk, on 1 May 2015. Before them it was Piet du Toit who handed over the responsibilities of this award-winning estate to his son, Hempies, the former Springbok prop.
Terroir has as much to do with the inimitable standard of Alto wines as the estate’s foundation of heritage as the country’s oldest red wine estate, keen modern insight and teamwork. With many gold medals in open competitions with the best wines in the world, the collection continues to charm even the most discerning connoisseurs.
