Perched high on the Franschhoek Pass, in the shadow of the Middagkrans mountains and boasting remarkable views of the valley below, La Petite Ferme is today a refined country escape that has seen the ebb and flow of food trends, retained loyal customers through the decades, and attracted a new generation of gourmands with its authentic country cuisine and warm hospitality.
While the restaurant may have humble beginnings – the name translates simply as ‘the small farm’ – over the decades the property has grown and evolved into a memorable winelands destination that today includes a boutique hotel, acclaimed country restaurant and celebrated winery.
The hotel offers nine unique rooms, each boasting panoramic views of the Franschhoek valley and surrounding winelands.
In the elegant Manor House four spacious suites give on to shady semi-private terraces, with a large communal pool offering a welcome respite from hot summer days. While the suites can be booked individually, the Manor House has also become a firm favourite with small groups and multi-generational travellers.
The five Vineyard Suites are ideal for couples, and offer charming country-style accommodation. Each suite overlooks the vineyards; with plunge pools and shady terraces ensuring an abundance of peace and privacy.
For while the restaurant and boutique hotel claim most of the limelight, La Petite Ferme is also home to a working wine cellar producing a wide range of premium wines for sale in the restaurant, and on the estate. A small portion of the annual production is also exported, predominantly to Belgium and the United Kingdom. The winery is open for vine orientation, followed by a wine tasting, by appointment between 10h30 and 15h15 only and it is complimentary to hotel residents
Those first guests that sat down to lunch one day in 1984 may not recognise much of La Petite Ferme today, but they would certainly be impressed by the remarkable evolution of ‘the little farm’.
